Cardinal - Hymns

First album in 18 years! At long last Richard Davies (moles) and Eric Matthews (sub pop) are reunited and it sounds fantastic! Let’s just take a minute to celebrate, it’s not often that our forgotten pop heroes ever return to the stage together sounding better than ever! Yes Yes!

So as I mentioned an a earlier post, earmilk.com had me submit a top ten list of hip hop albums for 2011. A few of my picks are up on the site now, to see the full list head over to earmilk.com. I decided to share my personal top 5 here.

#4 Shabazz Palaces - Black Up - Sub Pop
Shabazz Palaces is led by Ishmael Butler, formerly Butterfly of Digable Planets—possibly my favorite hip hop group of all time, and that’s saying something considering they only really cut two albums. Led by Ish with multi-instrumentalist Tendai Maraire on back-up, the Palaces pair teamed up to create what is tantamount to a modern Sun Ra-inspired opus. I would be doing this album a disservice if I called it just “hip hop;” it’s much more than the traditional beats and rhymes. With that in mind, the album is rewarding as much as it is challenging. It’s hard not to imagine this as a DP’s release—the album that could have been if the group had stayed together.
